F-V Step Team Stomp Their Way To A Win

Some Fuquay-Varina High School students have a great response when their mom tells them to not stomp inside the house; they’re practicing.

For years, the F-V High School Step Team have been stomping around and making noise. They’ve won competitions and gaining attention from not only their school and community, but from out of state as well.

With the recent win at the 2009 Triangle Youth “Step-Off”, the team has received lots of invitations for out of town competitions.

“They’ve been invited to go to Disney World, they’ve been invited to go to the Carolina Classic and then the upcoming big competition is this weekend,” said coach Yvonne Adkins.

The big competition Adkins speaks of is the TeenFest 2K9 in Durham, where the winner of the talent showcase wins $1,000. UPDATE: The step team won 2nd place and a $500 cash award.

But the team says stepping isn’t always about winning and competitions, it’s about working together as a team and developing friendships.

Team captains, Lakreisha Garrett and Franklin McCoy say their team is like one big family. Together, as a team, they create their own routines and collaborate on which moves work well.

“If a step is too difficult or too easy, we all can come together and make a cohesive step that looks good,” said McCoy.

The F-V Step Team, along with the booster club, says the team’s success wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the school, the community and local businesses that support them through fundraisers.

TeenFest 2K9 will take place April 4 at NC Central University. Celebrity judges include Bobbi Baker of House of Payne and actor/director Clifton Davis, and all events are free. For more information about TeenFest, click here.
