Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple Comes To DPAC
Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple will be taking the stage this week at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
The Broadway musical is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker. The book also hit the big screen in the mid 80′s as the Oscar nominated film by Steven Spielberg.
The Color Purple spans over four decades portraying problems faced by African-American women including issues of poverty, violence, racial oppression and spiritual crises.
Two cast members from the touring musical stopped by the NBC17 studios to talk about the show and teach NBC17 Today anchor Sharon Tazewell a few dance moves.
Felicia Fields plays the role of Sofia, an audience favorite, with strong opinions.
“She is a no nonsense character, a favorite with women…she’s a tough cookie,” describes Fields of her character Sofia.
Fields is one of the original actors when The Color Purple started on Broadway.
Brian Brooks is the dance captain and is also part of the cast. Click on the video player below to see Brian show Sharon a few moves.
The Color Purple will be at the DPAC until Sunday, May 17. For show and ticket information, click here.

I saw the show last night, it was wonderful, however I was amazed that the DPAC allowed so many people to enter the theater after the lights went dow. This was extremely irritating to those of us that were already in our seats. Also, so many peaple once they were seated continued to talk, text and disturb. I was simply amazed by the rudeness of these women. The seats were not cheap and I was there to enjoy the show. I would hope that the DPAC gets a clue or they will have some mad people for future shows.
