Local Teens Jump Rope On MTV Dance Show

America's Best Dance Crew

America's Best Dance Crew

WRITTEN BY: CHRIS COWPERTHWAITE– Over the last month, fans of dance competitions have been watching MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew.

One of the crews that’s still alive features a couple members from right here in the Triangle.

They’re not just representing North Carolina – they say they’re representing the sport of jump rope.

“It’s just been one of the most awesome experiences that any of us have ever had,” said Tyler Perez.

The Morrisville resident is one of the six people making up “Saltare” an all-star jump rope team that also includes another Triangle resident, Brittany Fortier.

The other four members are from all over the U.S.

“Some of these crews that we’re competing against have been together, practicing every single day for five or six years,” Perez said. “Whereas our crew has only been together as a group for a couple of months.”

Saltare has a big contingent of fans back here, especially at Tri-Force Jump Rope, where Tyler and Brittany practice year-round.

“Everybody at home was jumping up and down and screaming just as loud as everybody in the audience,” said Tyler’s mother, Sh’ay Perez. “So that was a lot of fun.”

One of the biggest challenges for the members of Saltare is incorporating dance into something that’s become second-nature to them over the years.

“Some of the tricks that we do in jump rope look kind of like break dancing. So they have that on their side,” said Kaylene Barker, a Tri-Force Jump Rope member. “But as far as hip hop dancing, I haven’t seen much of that yet.”

Because of that, Saltare is trying to show that jump rope deserves to be up there with all the other crews.

“We really are thinking, not so much about how are we going to do in a month or so, but what do we need to focus on in rehearsal in two hours,” said Perez.

They get their next chance at 10 p.m. Thursday night.

After the show, viewers can call the hotline phone number, or click here to vote for Saltare. One crew is eliminated after each show.
