Teens Get The Word Out About Spring Awakening Musical
WRITTEN BY: MARILYN PEGUERO– Teen sex, abortion and homosexuality are only some of the issues that rock musical Spring Awakening deals with.
The show is coming to the Durham Performing Arts Center this week and hundreds of local teenage fans have volunteered to spread the word about it.
The story of Spring Awakening takes place in Germany in the 1890′s, a time when teens explored their sexuality and its consequences on their own.
Parents and teachers in the story don’t talk about issues like abortion and homosexuality. Some teens today say that the issues presented in the story are still taboo, but the musical puts them on the table.
“It opens up a lot of doors that may not have been open before with your parents,” said Chapel Hill student Lauren Schwartz.
Schwartz is part of a group called “The Guilty Ones”. Members, compromised of students and teens, help get the word out about the show through social media sites like Facebook and by hanging posters at school campuses. In exchange for their work, “The Guilty Ones” get points for free tickets.
Stephen Killian has contacted more than 500 people about the show and has already racked up enough points to get six free tickets.
DPAC’s group of guilty ones started with 20 people and within weeks, the group grew to more than 800 members.
And it’s not just teens that are excited about the show. Some parents hope that it can help start what can be an awkward conversation.
“Very often we lecture our kids,” said Durham mom Sandy Sweitzer. “Hopefully this will be a chance for us to hear what they have to say.”
Spring Awakening will be playing at the DPAC starting March 2 and runs through March 7.
