Cast rehearses for "Esther"

Local musical theatre aficionados will have a chance to get a sneak peak of “Esther: A New Musical”, by Chapel Hill author and composer Pali Delevitt, during a series of concert workshops to be held in May.

“Esther” is a musical retelling of a Biblical story about the title character. According to the musical’s website, the story is set in Ancient Persia, and follows six central characters. The musical features belly dancers as well as sword dancers.

“My hope is that ‘Esther’ will be more than a successful play and great entertainment,” said Delevitt. “We also hope it will be an artistic voice that inspires the possibility and potential for peace and reconciliation between people who differ in culture and beliefs, but have shared humanity.”

Putting together a new musical is not an easy task, in fact it’s not “for the faint-hearted”, according to the musical’s production director, Evelyn McCauley.

“This is the certainly one of the most challenging, terrifying, and ambitious projects to date for me. I am an experienced performer, so those skills are certainly being put to the test,” McCauley said.

The actual musical isn’t expected to premiere until October, but in the meantime, “Esther” will be performed in concert workshops from May 21-23. Each performance will be followed by “an educational dialogue with the audience” and a cast meet-and-greet.

Shows are as follows:
May 21- UNC’s Friday Center, Grumman Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
May 22- PSI Theater in Durham at 7:30 p.m.
May 23- Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Raleigh at 4 p.m.
