Review: A Wonderful, Magical Experience Awaits At ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Show

100601_beauty_beastEven though it is a “tale as old as time,” when you go to see “Beauty and the Beast” at the Durham Performing Arts Center, it’s as if you’re a kid again seeing one of Disney’s most beloved romantic love stories for the very first time.

Growing up a fan of Disney’s princess characters, “Beauty and the Beast” was always my favorite. A story filled with many life lessons and catchy tunes, I was hoping the live version wouldn’t ruin the story or worse, butcher the songs. And I’m glad to say, the live show did neither. In fact, the live musical version of the classic cartoon strengthened my love for it.

Casting for a show, I assume, can be challenging. Finding that one person to play a specific character, especially one that so many people know, must be hard. But watching these performers on stage, it seems like they were made to play these characters. From the manly Gaston (played by Nathaniel Hackman) to the kooky Maurice (Christopher Spencer) these actors literally brought all the characters to life. Although Belle (Liz Shivener) will always be my favorite character, Michael Fatica who plays loyal sidekick Lefou, stole the show. He will have you laughing and smiling throughout the show.

All the songs featured in the movie are performed during the show as well as few others. And the spectacular “Be Our Guest,” was a jaw-dropping number filled with dancing dishes and surprises. Be sure you don’t miss “Gaston” which is sung during the first act. This is another fun song and the choreography for this number was amazing.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Disney show without a little bit of magic. I don’t want to give all the surprises away, but I was in awe. I’ve seen some spectacular productions at the DPAC, like last month’s “Wicked,” but this had that feel like you were actually right in the middle of all the excitement.

DPAC has always been very customer friendly, making sure all those in attendance felt like they’re at home. From the door greeters to the attendees in the restroom, they’re all there to make sure you have a great experience. So it’s only fitting to present a musical, where one of the more memorable songs is titled “Be Our Guest.”

This is a wonderful show to take your kids to. I saw a father there with his younger daughter. Both were dressed to nines and as they walked out of the theatre, the girl in her white dress, holding her dad’s hand, I know this will be a moment she will always remember.

The show is playing at the DPAC from June 8 through June 13. Click here for ticket and show information.
